How Dear Dolly came to be

by Emily Lineberger Bridges

I was raised on a farm where I enjoyed the company of horses, but when I was old enough to leave home and move to the city I did, leaving the farm life behind. I worked in the banking industry for 20 years and in 1992, my employer enrolled me in a self-awareness workshop in which the most amazing thing happened. I re-discovered my childhood horse, Dolly, and through my memories of her I connected once again to the lifestyle I had denied for so many years.

In 1996, my husband, Ron, and I moved to Tennessee to raise Arabian and half-Arabian horses. The first few years we focused on building our farm business. Several foals went on to new homes and we were proud of the training we gave them. Still, it seemed that something was missing.

Then in April of 2001, I had a horseback riding accident and suffered multiple injuries. While I was recuperating, I spent idle hours away from the horses. It was during this time, that I begin to think of Dolly again. My memories of her became the inspiration for writing about my life with horses.
